England defeated India by 227 runs on Day 5 of the first Test match in Chennai, to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.
In reply to England’s target of 420 runs, India could only able to score192 in 58.1 overs in their second innings. Virat Kohli was the top scorer for India with a knock of 72 runs off 104 balls.
With the departure of opener Rohit Sharma on Day 4, India had a poor start on the final day. Cheteshwar Pujara lost his wicket in the early stages, after scoring only 15 runs.
Opener Shubman Gill built a short partnership with captain Kohli, but was dismissed after reaching his half-century. The rest of India’s batsmen including the likes of Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar couldn’t stay more in front of England’s bowling department, who were on top form. Ravi Chandran Ashwin made a long term partnership but couldn’t deliver more.
Ben stokes killed the hope of Indians as he dismissed skipper Kohli.
Jack Leach picked four wickets, and James Anderson also did three dismissals. James Anderson was the real danger man for India. His reverse swing really disturbed the home sides batsmen. Jofra Archer, Dom Bess and Ben Stokes picked a wicket each.
Skipper Joe Root upis named as the Player Of the match. He remarked his 100th test match with the help of winning this match and captain’s knock of 258 runs in two innings.
The second Test match is set to begin on February 13, in the same venue as the fixture. The hosts will be aiming to stage a turnaround and level the series. Meanwhile, the visitors will be hoping to increase their lead.
