Spanish side, Sevilla clinched their sixth UEFA Europa League Title last night by defeating Antonio Conté’s Internazionale, 3-2.
The match was electrifying from the very first minute as both teams were in complete charge to clinch the trophy. Sevilla’s Brazilian defender, Diego Carlos gave away a cheap penalty which was effortlessly converted by Inter’s Belgian striker, Romelu Lukaku. What an excellent season it has been for Lukaku he scored 34 goals this season for Inter.
In the 12th minute, Sevilla was terrorising the opposition with a well knitted possession game but suddenly changed to a quick counter as Sevilla captain, Jesus Navas made a brilliant run through the right flank and delivered a pinpoint cross into the 18-yard box which was brilliantly converted by the new signing from Netherlands, Luuk de Jong, with a diving header which went into the back of the net with a slight deflection of Handanović’s gloves.
In the 33rd minute of the match, Sevilla won a free kick which was launched into the box by the Argentine midfielder, Ever Banega and once again, got converted by Luuk de Jong with utmost brilliancy. As a result the first half ended on a 2-2 scoreline.
From the beginning of the second half, both the teams were showing same level of concentration but the main breakthrough came when the timer struck the 74th minute mark. When Diego Carlos’s overhead kick was forced by Lukaku in to his own net which resulted in an own goal. And so, the scoreline after the 74th minute that was 3-2, and till the last second it remained the final scoreline of the match thus, Sevilla were lifting the trophy for the sixth time.
This was Julen Lopetegui’s first ever trophy as a manager. He was sacked by Spain days before the 2018 World Cup. His tenure was limited to just four months at Real Madrid.
And now, he shines for Sevilla. Also, the Sevilla’s playing XI against Inter included nine of their new signings, this season.
