Uber Eats Ligue 1 giants, Paris Saint-Germain landed eminent Argentine football personality Lionel Messi last month on a two-year deal after following the unexpected conclusion of his contract renewal with Barça due to LaLiga’s regulations, Messi made his debut as a substitute in PSG’s 2-0 victory over Reims last weekend. PSG President, Nasser Al-Khelaifi did so with one thing in mind, to win their maiden UEFA Champions League.
While Paris Saint-Germain have dominated French football for over the past one decade by winning seven Ligue 1 titles as well as Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue on six occasions apiece in that time still, it is the UEFA Champions League crown that has continued to elude the French outfit.
In the season 2021/22, they will be having the likes of Neymar Jr., Lionel Messi, and Kylian Mbappé to fabricate their attacking line, perhaps only for one year but, the capital club has put all their chips to the table.
Coming to UEFA Champions League 2021/22, the Ligue 1 side are the favorites to win the competition and one of their former player believes that this will be the year PSG finally be crowned the Champions of Europe.
In an interview with ESPN Argentina, Juan Roman Riquelme, the current Deputy President of Boca Juniors, stated that he sees Leo Messi and PSG winning the competition this time.
“Hopefully, Messi will continue to have fun in Paris. I don’t know if it’s weird, but we’re all excited to see him having fun with Mbappé and Neymar,” Riquelme said.
Riquelme, who had played alongside Messi for both club and country, believes that his ex-teammate will put the cherry on top in PSG’s quest for European glory.
It will be interesting to see if Riquelme’s prediction comes true considering considering the PSG’s 25-man squad which resembles to that of a FIFA Career Mode squad after PSG declined offers from Real Madrid for Mbappé this past summer.
But at the same time, the former Argentine midfielder does not think that Messi’s story at Barcelona is over just yet.
“Messi is the best because he likes to play ball,” said the Boca Juniors Vice-President, who has also won an Olympic Gold medal for Argentina alongside Leo back in 2008, in Beijing.
He also added, “If PSG don’t win the Champions League now with Messi, they don’t win it anymore. I’m sure Messi is going to win the Champions League with Paris and retire with Barcelona.”
