Liverpool’s aura of invincibility is gone as Aston Villa score 7 past the Champions of England

On the last matchday before heading into the International break another high scoring game in Europe saw Jurgen Klopp’s Champions getting dismantled by Aston Villa.

Dean Smith’s summer signing Ollie Watkins made the most out of Adrian’s error to break the deadlock for Aston Villa inside just four minutes. Watkins first goal was a gift from Adrian but his second was a classy top corner goal.

Aston Villa players celebrating after scoring against Liverpool

Liverpool’s talisman Mohammed Salah got his team-mate covered and pulled one back for the Reds of Merseyside. But, soon after that goal John McGinn’s volley took a big deflection of Virgil van Dijk and Villa had a 2 goal cushion.

Watkins scored a hard fought hatrick and became the first player to score three times against Liverpool twice in a decade. Villa’s latest recruit Ross Barkley had a debut to remember as he found the back of the net against the Defending champions and Jack Grealish’s brace gave Liverpool a fine embarrassing touch.

Coronavirus infections denied Liverpool both Sadio Mane, new signing Thiago Alcantara and even Brazilian shot stopper Alisson Becker was out due to a shoulder injury.

No defending champion in 67 years has lost so heavily in England. It’s been 57 years since Liverpool was beaten as badly. Liverpool’s next trip will be to Merseyside rivals Everton who sit at the top of table.
