The Premier League is halfway through the 2020-21 season, and no doubt you might be wondering that which team has emerged as the favourite for the PL title race.
But surprisingly there is not a single team which can be termed as a favourite, solely because of the staggering competition the PL is offering this season.
The table is really tight and only a matter of few points is separating a team from an upright or an catastrophe. In fact only two points is separating the runners up and the league leaders at the moment, which happen to be Manchester City and Manchester United respectively, which is no less than a benediction for footballing fans all around the globe, seeing the diehard rivals from North – West London fight for the top spot.
Even though the Premier League table is very unstable and keeps changing after every now and then, the Red Devils are currently at the top spot with a total of 40 points, a position in which very few might have expected them to be after a disappointing start to the season. After their elimination from the knockout stages of the Champions league and a bad form in the premier league as well, many anticipated that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would soon be sacked and Manchester United would soon crumble.
But the absolute contrary happened as it didn’t take the Norwegian too long to bring out the absolute best of his team and take them to the spot of the PL and a possible good campaign in the Europa League. Another instrumental role in Manchester United good form was played by players such as Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, David De Gea, Wan Bisakka, Eric Bailey . Another player who deserves a great appreciation is Paul Pogba who seems to be coming back to his best and has scored many important goals for the Reds already this season.
Just behind Manchester United, are their rival neighbours Manchester City who have completely turned the tables around after a very bad start to the season according to their standards. Even though the start was poor, but Pep Guardiola and his men came from nowhere to surprise everyone. In fact the team has won their last 10 games in all competitions, an achievement which is a proof of their blockbuster form.
The Cityzens are presently in the 2nd spot, only 2 points behind United with a game in hand. Even though they are in a great condition, a few days ago Manchester City suffered a major drawback as their most important player Kevin De Bruyne suffered an injury forcing him out for a month and a half.
The third and fourth place is acquired by Leicester and Liverpool respectively. The Foxes on one side have been very consistent all throughout this season, the Reds suffered a different fate as they have fallen behind after a bright start going down from the top spot to the brink of losing out on the top 4 in a matter of few games. Another shocking fact is that it’s been 438 minutes since Liverpool last scored and last week lost a Premier League game at Anfield for the first time since 2017 to the hands of Burnley. As for the Foxes, they have shown promising signs of progress and are at the moment key figures in the title race.
The 5th, 6th and 7th spots are currently taken by Spurs, Everton and West Ham United. Spurs have been very impressive all throughout the season being at the elite half of the table for almost the whole time this season. Son and Kane have proven to be key figures in achieving this feat. Also Højbjerg, who was brought to the club from Southampton, has been great playing with Jose Mourinho’s plans and tactical leadership. Everton’s case is very similar to Spurs’.
Under the guidance of their boss Carlo Ancelotti, the club has flourished and has maintained their position at the very top. Dominic Calvert Lewin, James Rodriguez, Digne, Richarlison have also played a key role in the teams accomplishment. On the other hand, West Ham United who were a part of the relegation battle last season, surprisingly are present at the 7th spot half way through the season and are enjoying a good form after winning 5 game in a row.
The final 3 teams placed at the upper half of the table are Aston Villa, Chelsea and Southampton. Aston Villa was another team who was fighting relegation last season, even until the final minutes of the last matchday. But this season they have turned things around dramatically showing great intent and desire from the very beginning of the season being at the top half of the table. Chelsea diversely haven’t been satisfying at all. Even after spending dearly at the summer transfer window, the team isn’t playing good football.
Some of the star signings such as Timo Werner and Kai Havertz have failed to make any sort of impression since joining the club. Also their coach Frank Lampard doesn’t seem to be able to solve the crisis at the club. On the 10th spot are the Saint Marie’s who have also should great signs of progress to maintain their position at the top half of the table and have defeated some big teams like Liverpool in their journey.
The bottom half of the table is filled by Arsenal, Leeds, Crystal Palace, Wolves Burnley, Newcastle and Brighton respectively. The first half of the season was undoubtedly disappointing for these teams, but they will surely try their best to do better in the matches left to find themselves in a good position at the end of the season.
In the bottom 3 are present Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United FC, each 5, 6 and 12 points away from safety respectively. Chances of Sheffield United FC survival in the Premier League are thin as they have picked only 5 points in 19 games this season. On the brighter side Fulham and West Bromwich Albion can rise from their ruins and survive in the Premier League.
