France vs Portugal : Battle between World Champions and Euro Champions

Date:

Portugal vs France, the most anticipated fixture during the International break failed to live upto it’s billing as it saw both the teams settle on level terms at the Stade de France.

The first half was played with an high intensity but lagged any clear cut chances. Barcelona’s new number 7 Antoine Griezmann was the only player to manage a shot on target but Rui Partricio had it covered.

Portuguese Skipper Cristiano Ronaldo almost found the back in the first half but France defender Lucas Hernandez had different plans and produced an outstanding block to deny CR7 while Ronaldo vented his frustration at team mate Joao Felix after the forward skewed wide as he met a cross which Ronaldo was waiting to turn into the net.

Cristiano Ronaldo again came close to scoring when he fired a left-footed strike at goal in added time but French skipper Hugo Lloris stood tall against the Portugal great.

Portugal defender Pepe looked to have finally broken the deadlock late on when he placed a diving header in the net following a free kick but he was ruled offside.

The Nations League clash between the two European Giants was their first meeting since Portugal’s iconic win at the Euro 2016 final and unfortunately fans were not in for a treat this time around.

The result kept holders Portugal top of League A Group 3 with seven points after three games, while France are second, also with seven. Croatia are third on three after winning 2-1 at home to Sweden, who are bottom with no points.

Only 1,000 fans were let in to the 80,000-capacity Stade de France to witness the Champions of the Euros against the World Cup Champions.
