The Fortress of Gabba to be “demolished” and lifted for the Olympic Games 2032

The pride of Australian cricket, the Fortress of the gentleman’s game, Gabba stadium would be “essentially demolished” as the Queensland government has planned to redevelop and lift the stadium for the 2032 Olympic Games.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Gabba, which has been home to Queensland sport including cricket and AFL for 126 years, would be in charge of hosting the opening and closing ceremonies for the Olympic Games.

Every Games needs a home, the Premier said. “The Gabba has been home to our sport since 1895. A home for the 2032 Olympic Paralympic Games could be its crowning glory.”

The director of stadium designing firm Populous, Chris Paterson, voiced that Gabba would be demolished and a new stadium is going to lifted.

Asked if the stadium would be “essentially demolished”, Ms Palaszczuk said that, it would “and there will not be a bad seat”.

“We looked at a number of options about whether we could remodel. We are actually going to lift this stadium.”

Ms Palaszczuk said the upgrade to the Woolloongabba stadium would increase its capacity to about 50,000 which is a pretty impressive for a stadium dedicated to Olympics.

It would also include a new pedestrian plaza linking the stadium to the Cross River Rail station, which is also currently under construction and would be ready for operation in the coming years.

Ms Palaszczuk said final details were still being worked out but the upgrade would cost about $1 billion which is gonna be a mammoth expenditure or, investment will be a more suitable appellation.

She also said that having a main stadium just two kilometres from the CBD would give Queensland an advantage which the other Games hosts had not had.

Brisbane is the prime contender to host the 2032 Games after the International Olympic Committee named south-east Queensland as its preferred candidate last month.

Bid organisers have insisted that they can host a cost-neutral Olympic Games, under a plan to use legacy facilities from the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and Sydney 2000.

The state government had been considering building the main stadium at the Albion Park Raceway site, in Brisbane’s inner north-east, but decided to push ahead with Gabba for it’s historic presence.

Brisbane lord mayor, Adrian Schrinner said he welcomed the redevelopment of the Gabba.

“Council’s investment in the Brisbane Metro will help move tens of thousands of people to the doorstep of this venue, with capacity for high-frequency, 24/7 trips,” Cr Schrinner said.

“The Kangaroo Point-to-CBD green bridge will also provide an active travel link direct from the stadium precinct into the heart of the CBD, where residents and visitors can shop, dine and support our local businesses. With the Gold Coast’s Carrara Stadium in consideration until recently, the Gabba is the right choice for the 2032 Games and will also benefit countless major events over the decades to come.”
